ALTTA held its Poetry In Motion event in early November with First Lady Susan Hutchinson as guest speaker. She recounted her personal journey growing up with a love for the arts and how that grew into an advocacy for the arts. She believes that ‘art is education, it’s not an add-on wish list. It’s a brain-builder!” Mrs. Hutchinson is a well-known advocate for children at risk and has worked towards having Children’s Advocacy Centers in every county in Arkansas.
The event featured teaching artist and poet, Kai Coggin, the Governor’s Award recipient for Arts Education and dance educator, Amy Bramlett Turner, with members of the Hot Springs Dance Troupe. Coggin and Turner collaborated on an in-school program so that students could create their own poem and then original dance based on that poem. Student Moriah Thacker wrote “Can You Hear Me?” and then choreographed for two dancers. The work was short but powerful and illustrated the horror of human trafficking.
